About Math Rescue

Hi, I’m Andre.

I’m a math teacher, I’ve been in math education for over ten years, and I love boosting students!

Many families find me when something’s gone wrong: a rough test, a unit that didn’t make sense, a student who’s decided they’re “just not a math person.” It’s where the name Math Rescue came from.

Plenty of my students aren’t struggling at all. They’re bright, they’re busy, and their parents want them to have someone in their corner. Someone who explains the why behind the math, nudges them a little past what class covers, and makes sure they’re always one step ahead.

How I teach

I teach Socratically, which is a formal way of saying I ask a lot of questions. Instead of showing a student how to do a problem, I ask what they notice, what they’d try first, and why. They do the thinking and I guide it.

Socratic questioning is powerful because it’s assessment and teaching happening at the same time. In education terms, it’s formative assessment built precisely into the lesson.

1

It shows me what they know

Every answer tells me exactly where a student is, so I’m never guessing about what they understand.

2

It shapes how they think

A well-placed question, once they can answer it, changes how they see the problem. Over time they start asking themselves those questions, and that builds real independence and problem solving.

Background

My experience

I’m a full-time, one-on-one virtual math instructor. Instead of teaching in the typical 25-student setting with three to four math preps a year, I teach thirty or more accredited courses a year, each one-on-one, plus supplemental tutoring. I’ve also had the pleasure of lecturing at St. Petersburg College.

This setup gives me a full-scope understanding of, and familiarity with, the national mathematics curriculum from middle school all the way through late undergrad. My students aren’t just built for success in their current course. They’re being prepped to dominate the entire track.

Sessions

What sessions look like

Most families pick a regular weekly time.

Keep up with class

We work on what’s happening in class right now. We go over homework together or work through my custom Desmos curriculum, aligned to the skills tested on the SAT, ACT and state end-of-course exams.

Get a little ahead

We look at what’s coming next, so new topics already feel familiar.

Prep for the big tests

Entrance exams like the SSAT and ISEE, placement tests and the SAT. Desmos is a massive advantage since it’s built into the digital SAT, and it’s a routine part of my sessions.

All on Zoom

For maximum convenience, so nobody has to rush to another location after practice.

Applying to a private school in Tampa Bay? I’ve written guides for Shorecrest and Tampa Prep families.
